Identify marine mammals using the SeaSpotter app. Become a Citizen Scientist now and share your discoveries to help preserve our seas.

SeaSpotter is a joint initiative between the Department of Conservation, WWF, Christchurch City Council, the Ministry of Primary Industries, MAUI63 and Microsoft.
Our goal is to create an ecosystem where everyone can contribute to and access comprehensive marine mammal data, to help protect endangered and at-risk marine wildlife.

With your help, we can accurately identify your discoveries and log them in our public database for scientific research purposes.
HOW DOES SEASPOTTER WORK?
Helping save New Zealand marine mammals has never been easier. Become a Citizen Scientist today by simply taking a snap of any marine mammals you encounter. SeaSpotter will then help you identify which animal you spotted, and log your findings to our open-source database ready for scientific research. The more data we can collect, the more we can learn.

1.
SPOT

While out on the ocean, keep an eye out for any marine mammals coming up for air

2.
SNAP

Take a photo of the animal using our app, or upload one you've already taken

3.
SHARE

Share when and where you had your encounter so we can let scientists know the details

4.
LEARN

AI will try to help let you know which animal you spotted and show you nearby sightings

WHAT IS A CITIZEN SCIENTIST?
Citizen Science is the practice of collaborative and inclusive scientific research by the community as a whole. You don't have to be a qualified scientist to help - anyone can do their part by collecting data to aid the rest of the scientific community.

As technology improves, our ability to crowd-source data has increased exponentially and science is no longer reserved simply for scientists and academics. SeaSpotter allows anyone in New Zealand to become a Citizen Scientist and help support local marine mammal research with their very own insights and discoveries.
